AVID

Advancement Via Individual Determination

AVID at Keone'ula

Vision: Establish an enriching, motivating, empowering environment in which all students develop a growth mindset toward learning. 
Purpose: Provide all students with fundamental skills to promote academic success, self-efficacy, and self-advocacy as they begin their educational journey.
Objectives:
​•  Experience WICOR lessons
•  Develop student success skills, partnerships, and a college-going                      mentality in all students
•  Provide tools for all students to effectively navigate the culture of                    school systems and academic transitions throughout their education              careers
•  Strengthen transitions across entire feeder patterns
•  Develop a common language of articulation, calibration, assessment,               and accountability to promote equity and access for all students within       the AVID College Readiness System

Expectations:

Grades K-2:
  • Students write in planners and get parent signature
  • Organize school desks, cubbies, and backpacks
  • Take 2 column to 3 column notes
  • Internalize and answer different levels of questioning

Grades 3-6:
  • Students write in planner to stay organized and check off homework as it is completed
  • Organizational tools that provide self monitoring and assessments
  • Use STAR note-taking
  • ​Levels of questioning (higher level cognitive and critical thinking skills)

Here's a great video showing what AVID is all about and how it starts in elementary. It carries over to middle and high school. Students are motivated at a young age to be college ready.
